Meet Principal Johnson!

Meet Principal Cory Johnson! Mr.Johnson, after recently transferring from Carteret’s MAST early college, is now the principal here at West Carteret High School. Mr. Johnson grew up in a small town in our home state of North Carolina. What many people don't know about Mr. Johnson is that he did not originally plan on becoming a teacher! Mr. Johnson originally began his career in banking, luckily he was not all that successful in this career field. As I sat with Mr. Johnson who recalled his time as a banker, “I wanted to help people…that, and banking don't mix.” He further explained that, “[he] decided that the best way to help others was through education.” Mr.Johnson punctuates his original career with a business-like attitude of straightforwardness. This is still seen in his mannerisms today, and is further shown through the banning of jean day Wednesday (a day where teachers were allowed to wear jeans). Mr. Johnson states that he was biased against the day as he was never a fan of jeans himself. Despite the cut to the chase attitude of our new principal he also has a very wholesome side. Mr.Johnson explains, “I view everyone in the school as a family…I try to do my best by them, and help when I can.” When asked about the student body specifically, principal Johnson stated, “This is one of the good behaving groups that I’ve had…It has its flaws, but from what I have seen (specifically in the regard of phones), this group will do well.” Mr. Johnson also has a rather extensive family, riddled with brothers and sisters alike. Mr. Johnson has been overwhelmingly supportive of his students so far. Already, he has taken many under his proverbial wing. He plans to continue to improve both himself and the school as a whole, whilst trying to create a culture of academic excellence and solidarity.
