Fall Recommendations

It is now the most wonderful time of the year! The leaves are falling, it is beginning to get cold, and everywhere smells like pumpkin spice. Here are some suggestions to fully immerse yourself into the fall spirit.

Movies:

Fantastic Mr. Fox: This wonderful Wes Anderson movie is the embodiment of autumn. It tells the story of an urbanized fox who, often getting bored with his mundane life, starts to steal chicken from a group of violent farmers. George Clooney voices the main character, Mr. Fox, which makes this movie all the more of a cinematic marvel.

Hocus Pocus: By far one of the most famous Halloween movies, Hocus Pocus is a must watch during this season. It tells the story of three witch sisters, who come back to life to haunt Salem after being hanged for witchcraft during the witch trials, and two siblings, Max and Danny, who must defeat them.

Scream: The best time to watch a horror movie is during Halloween! Scream focuses on a local high school murderer who may actually be much closer than they seem. This movie intertwines horror and comedy to make a truly memorable experience.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving: Charlie Brown features always provide a wholesome and nostalgic experience for the whole family. In this animated feature, Snoopy and friends make a Thanksgiving dinner and tell the story of the Mayflower.

TV Shows:

Gilmore Girls: Gilmore girls gives off the perfect cozy vibes that you need as autumn starts. It tells the story of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, a mother and daughter pair, as they go through life together. Set in the town of Stars Hollow, the scenes of pumpkins, leaves, and hayrides, perfectly create the feeling of fall.

The Haunting of Hill House: This spooky retelling of the novel by Shirely Jackson tells of the story of a family who struggles with the haunting memories of their childhood home and the evil events that transgressed there.

Supernatural: Supernatural focuses on the story of Sam and Dean Winchester, two brothers who while searching for their father, fight demons and evil along the way. This whole show has spooky themes, but some seasons even have special Halloween episodes!

Activities:

Go to a pumpkin patch: There are many local farms that allow you to go to a pumpkin patch to select your pumpkins. For example, The Barnyard and Mike's Farm. Mike´s Farm allows you to go on a hayride to the pumpkin patch and also has a restaurant to fill your bellies.

Collect fall leaves & walk in the woods: Since we live in coastal NC, it may be hard to find many changing leaves. This makes the ones you are able to find all the more beautiful! It is the perfect time of the year to mushroom hunt. The WCHS school paper does not encourage eating any

that you may find along the way. However, sighting and taking pictures of those you do find can help you identify them!

Attend local fall festivals and farmer markets: Farmer markets on a chilly morning hold secret treasures! There are many local fall festivals this year too, such as Camp Albemarle´s, the Hoot-n-Nanny, etc. These are the perfect activities to get you into the Halloween spirit.

Eat some autumnal foods: It is soup season! I recommend a cozy soup that makes you warm inside, such as pumpkin soup or chili. Make some pumpkin or cinnamon flavored sweets. There are many options in this category, make sure to try as many as possible!
